“My father’s name was Walter Shirley.  My mother’s name was Bertha Shirley.  Aren’t Walter and Bertha lovely names? I’m so glad my parents had nice names.  It would be a real disgrace to have a father named—well, say Jedediah, wouldn’t it?”

“I guess it doesn’t matter what a person’s name is as long as he behaves himself,” said Marilla.

Anne Shirley clearly attaches great importance to the ‘e’ in the spelling of her name, being careful to tell the world that she is “Anne with an ‘e’, if you please!”  Lucy Maud Montgomery’s choice to for Anne’s name, including the character’s own attachment to her name, is an important aspect of Anne’s story.  It also reveals the Victorian and Edwardian practice of understanding the etymology and greater meaning behind names.

Here’s a little bit of background for some of the names from Anne of Green Gables:

Anne— feminine name; a variant of Ann (Hebrew) and Hannah (Hebrew) and Anna; the meaning of Anne is “He (God) has favored me”. In Christian tradition, the name of the mother of the Virgin Mary.

Matthew—masculine name; of Hebrew origin, commonly used in the Bible; derives from the name Matthaios, the Greek form of the Hebrew name Mattityahu meaning “gift of Yahweh”.

Marilla— feminine name, pronounced ma-RILL-ah. The meaning of Marilla is “shining sea“. Variant of Muriel, and related to the names Marillis (which is a short form of Amaryllis).

Diana—feminine name; an ancient Roman deity, virgin goddess of the moon and of hunting, and protector of women, identified by the Romans with the Greek Artemis. Also traditionally the name of the moon personified as a goddess.

Walter—masculine name; derives from the Old Germanic term Walthari or Walthere, meaning “ruler of the army,” made from the words waltan “to rule” + hari “host, army”.

Bertha—female name; the name of a goddess, lit. “the bright one,” from a Germanic word meaning “bright.” Popularized by the mother of the ruler Charlemagne, named Bertha.  She was the wife of Frankish king Pepin the Short, and was famed for her modesty.  This led to the word ‘bertha’ becoming also known as a type of wide deep capelike collar, often of lace, usually to cover up a low neckline.

Lucy—feminine name; from the French Lucie, feminine version of Lucius.  Of Latin origin, and meaning “light”.  Also a nickname for one of the most complete skeletons of an early ancestor of humans ever found. Discovered in Ethiopia, “Lucy” lived approximately three million years ago, and is considered one of the great finds of anthropology.

The painting serves as one of the primary subjects of Out of the Shadows. In the film, scientists use a variety of techniques to analyze the piece. Using x-ray radiography and infrared reflectography, researchers were able to learn of a possible second painting – an “underpainting” – beneath Old Man with a Beard. Using a variety of more advanced techniques, they were able to confirm the existence of the underpainting, and to discover its subject. These processes revealed a hidden self-portrait of Rembrandt himself. In combination with other chemical tests, this information was crucial to finally attributing Old Man with a Beard as an authentic Rembrandt. Tomorrow’s events in Amsterdam will celebrate this groundbreaking discovery.

To start the day, the painting and its recent attribution will be honoured at the Euronext Amsterdam Stock Exchange, as part of the prestigious gong ceremony that opens the day’s trading. Out of the Shadows’ writer, director and producer Kevin Sullivan and several of the key scientists involved in discovering the painting’s true history will be present to take part in the excitement.

The painting is on loan from a private collector, and will be displayed on site at the Rembrandt House for one day only. The researchers featured in Out of the Shadows, Ernst van de Wetering (Emeritus Professor of Art History at the University of Amsterdam and head of the Rembrandt Research Project), Martin Bijl (restorer), Joris Dik (professor at the Delft University of Technology), and Koen Janssens (professor at the University of Antwerp), will be giving a presentation describing the attribution process, the “underpainting” of Old Man with a Beard, and the markers that indicate the painting to be Rembrandt’s. Kevin Sullivan will be in attendance for this momentous event.

This attention to detail led to the choice to have Martha Mann create the costumes for Lantern Hill. 

Mann, having created the beautiful costumes for Anne of Green Gables and Anne: The Sequel, has a reputation for her painstaking research and careful attention to every aspect of costumes.
